India's Human Development Index (HDI) Journey: Progress and Prospects in 2024
India has made significant strides in improving its HDI value, which stands at 0.644 in 2022, India's position has moved from 135 to 134 out of 193 countries according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from 2021 to 2022 . This marks a notable improvement from previous years, reflecting the nation's commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
The HDI is a composite index measuring average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, knowledge, and a decent standard of living. India's progress is evident across all HDI indicators, including life expectancy, education, and Gross National Income (GNI) per capita.
Life expectancy in India has risen from 67.2 to 67.7 years, showcasing improvements in healthcare and living conditions. Education has also seen positive changes, with expected years of schooling reaching 12.6 and mean years of schooling increasing to 6.57. These advancements highlight India's focus on educational development and its impact on future generations.
Economically, India's Gross National income (GNI) per capita has grown from $6,542 to $6,951, indicating a stronger economy and better income distribution. Furthermore, India has demonstrated progress in reducing gender inequality, India take a jump of 14 Ranks with a Gender Inequality Index (GII) value of 0.437, better than both the global and South Asian averages.
Despite these achievements, challenges remain. The global HDI value has reached record highs in 2023, but progress is uneven across different regions. Rich countries have experienced record levels of human development, while half of the world's poorest countries remain below their pre-crisis level of progress.
India's journey towards higher human development is ongoing. With a renewed focus on inclusive growth and women-led development, the country can further unlock socio-economic progress and pave the way for a brighter future for all its citizens.
As we look ahead to the rest of 2024 and beyond, it is crucial for India to maintain its momentum in human development. Continued investments in health, education, and economic opportunities will be key to ensuring that all Indians can enjoy a high quality of life and contribute to the nation's prosperity.
